Abstract:
Background & Objectives: Marital adjustment is one of the important factors in life satisfaction and mental health. A successful married life is related to marital adjustment, which includes the compatibility of couples with each other and their living conditions, and ultimately leads to the stability and growth of the family and the formation of healthy and correct relationships within the family. The present study was conducted with the aim of predicting marital adjustment based on coping strategies, communication skills and resilience in non-clinical population.
Methods: The current research method was descriptive-correlation research. The statistical population included all married employees of Gorgan University of Medical Sciences in 2022. The participants entered the study voluntarily and completed the informed consent form. The inclusion criteria were: willingness to participate in the research, being married, not having psychological problems, and not currently undergoing family counseling and couples therapy. Exclusion criteria included unwillingness to participate in the research, psychological problems, and not being married. The research tools included Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ; Lazarus & Folkman, 1988), Communication Skills Questionnaire (CSQ; Jarabek, 2004), The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC; Connor & Davidson, 2003). In order to analyze the data, descriptive statistics indices (mean, standard deviation, etc.) were used, as well as Pearson's correlation coefficient test and univariate and multivariate regression analysis were used in the inferential statistics section. The data was statistically analyzed using SPSS-24 software and significance level was below 0.05.
Results: A total of 217 employees of Gorgan University of Medical Sciences were present as sample members in this study. The average age of the members of the studied sample was 37.76 years with a standard deviation of 8.45. Also, the lowest age among the sample members was 22 years and the highest age was 52 years. The findings showed that there is a significant correlation between marital adjustment and all predictive variables including problem-oriented coping strategy (r=0.20; p<0.01), emotion-oriented coping strategy (r=-0.22; p<0.01), resilience (r=0.45; p<0.01) and communication skills (r=0.28; p<0.01). Coping strategies, communication skills and resilience were analyzed as predictor variables and marital adjustment as criterion variable in multiple regression equation. Predictor variables in the regression equation significantly predicted marital adjustment (F=12.37, p<0.001). Predictor variables explained 27% of the variance of marital adjustment. The results indicate that communication skills (β=1.013, B=0.45, P<0.001), and resilience (β=0.488, B=0.24, P=0.004) predict marital adjustment positively. But the regression coefficients of problem-oriented coping strategy (β=0.086, B=0.05, P=0.70), and emotion-oriented coping strategy (β=0.206, B=0.15, 25 P=0.25) was not significant.
Conclusion: The results of the research showed that the regression model is significant for predicting marital adjustment based on coping strategies, communication skills and resilience. In the resulting explanation, it can be stated that couples learn with communication skills; listen to each other, have emotional expression, gain insight into the relationship process, control their negative emotions, and be able to communicate their thoughts, feelings, needs, desires, and wishes clearly, clearly, and effectively. Of course, when the conditions are such that couples express themselves to each other and control their negative emotions and also listen to each other; they will feel happiness and satisfaction from marriage and being together. This satisfaction and feeling of happiness can lead to the reduction of feeling of loneliness, increase of quality of life, mutual understanding of couples from each other and improvement of the quality of social relations of the family, and as a result, it increases the compatibility of couples in the relationship. On the other hand, the more the marital adjustment of the couple increases, the more ground is provided for the development and implementation of communication skills in the marital relationship. When couples have higher resilience, their endurance in facing challenges increases and they are not easily upset by different impulses of life, and as a result, with their greater balance, it leads to marital compatibility in them. It is suggested that in future research, the effect of improving couples' coping strategies and resilience on marital adjustment should be investigated semi-experimentally.
